Assessing (and Ignoring) the New Fall Season

As I type this, I’m listening to the new Radiohead album, In Rainbows, and I’m in a terrifically good mood. See, I love Radiohead like Tyra Banks loves … well, Tyra Banks, and so you would think that this good mood would make me put together a list of wonderful things about the new fall TV season.
Yeah, not so much. To be honest, I haven’t watched a lot of the new fall network TV shows. But it’s worthwhile to take a look at these shows and for me to say what I watched, what I thought, and why I didn’t watch a lot of them. Well, it’s worthwhile for me anyway. Plus it goes well with Radiohead (not really, but it’s not like I’m gonna stop listening). Here goes:

Depending on how you look at it, two networks shared last night’s crown. CBS may have grabbed the viewers, but ABC had it where it counts: the demos.

- ABC’s Pushing Daisies (10.26 million, 3.7/11 in 18-49) won the demos in the time period.
- America’s Next Top Model was up from last week (5.37 million, 2.5/7).
- Fox’s Back to You (6.62 million, 2.3/7) was down this week and was ‘Til Death (6.5 million, 2.4/7).
- Kid Nation (6.91 million, 2.1/6 in 18-49) placed fifth in the important age group.
9pm
- Despite mixed review, Private Practice (12.42 million, 4.9/13 share) took the hour’s demos with ease.

‘Gossip Girl’ Fans To Get a Full Season
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, The CW, Announcements,
Strong word-of-mouth has earned CW newbie, Gossip Girl, a full-season order. The Josh Schwartz (Chuck) series is a perfect replacement for those who loved his last production, The O.C. The show stars Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) as Serena van der Woodsen, a girl who returns to her vicious private school after mysteriously leaving town. Leighton Meester plays Blair Waldorf, Serena’s former best friend and current frenemy.
The catty series has so far proven to be a much darker version of our typical teenage dramas (imagine The O.C. plus Heathers). And with voyeuristic narration supplied by the anonymous ‘gossip girl’, things get to be so much cattier.
For those who have not yet watched the series, it’s not too late. The first two episodes are currently hot iTunes downloads. Once you get yourself caught up, you can find Gossip Girl on Wednesdays @ 9pm on The CW. I promise you—the backstabbing here is much more exciting than that Private Practice/Bionic Woman battle. Plus - you’ll come to learn valuable fashion lessons. Had I not watched last week, how would I have known that blue eyeshadow was back?

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Sci-Fi/Horror, ABC, CBS, NBC, Ratings,
CBS easily won an evening that saw a large number of reruns. A victory night not come so easily next week when two more ABC shows (Women’s Murder Club, Men in Trees) begin.

9pm
- With 8.3 million viewers, CBS’ Moonlight (2.2/7 in 18-49) was the hour’s winner.
- The critically-acclaimed Friday Night Lights (6.5 million, 2.2/7) gained 200,000 viewers from last season’s finale and tied in the key demos.
- A rerun of Private Practice drew 4.9 million; a second-showing of K-Ville saw 3.3 million.

Kate Walsh is a Big Winner
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip,
Looks like Kate Walsh is on a roll these days. Not only has her Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, Private Practice, been picked up… but she also just got engaged. Lucky girl, indeed. ABC announced that the show has officially been added to the fall roster, given the excellent ratings of the recent Kate Walsh-centric episode of Grey’s. Interestingly enough, despite the great cast (Taye Diggs, Tim Daly, Amy Brenneman, among others), viewers seem to be lukewarm about the spinoff. I don’t watch Grey’s (I know, I must totally be in the minority on that one), so I’m not sure how the Private Practice pilot held up. Looks like ABC is willing to give it a try though, however, the show will air on Wednesdays in the fall, rather than in the cushy post-Grey’s Anatomy time slot. Now, on to the engagement—which happened just one day after she got word that her series was being picked up. Her boyfriend, 20th Century Fox copresident of production Alex Young, popped the question even though they have only been dating for a few months. Was he waiting to see if her series would get the green light, or is that just a funny coincidence?
